All medievalists, early modernists, and friends of the programs are welcome to attend!

Please join us for the first Modern Writers/Premodern Worlds event, featuring Arkady Martine, author of the Hugo-winning novels A Memory Called Empire and A Desolation Called Peace and, most recently, Rose/House.

She will join us for a reading and discussion at 4:30pm on Monday September 18 in HQ L01, followed by a reception. All welcome!

This week we will be joined by visiting scholar Arkady Martine, an award-winning writer of science fiction, who holds a PhD in Byzantine History from Rutgers. She has kindly agreed to participate in an informal Q&A session, in which we invite you to air all your burning questions about writing – especially writing other than traditionally scholastic articles and monographs – in and out of the academy. How can we use different genres to open up our disciplines to our students for exploration, while encouraging them to adopt a creative writing practice of their own?

The Department of Italian Studies Annual Dante Lecture presents Teodolinda Barolini, Lorenzo Da Ponte Professor of Italian, Columbia University, speaking on Dante and Aristotle on Voluntary and Involuntary Action: Nicomachean Ethics 3.1 in Inferno 5 and Paradiso 3-5.
