AZ Zayaruznaya

AZ received their Ph.D. in historical musicology from Harvard University in 2010 and taught at New York University and Princeton University before coming to Yale in 2014. Their publications situated at the intersecting histories of composition, notation, and music theory have received numerous prizes including the John Nicholas Brown Prize of the Medieval Academy of America and the Outstanding Publication Award from the Society for Music Theory. AZ is the author of two books (The Monstrous New Art: Divided Forms in the Late Medieval Motet, Cambridge 2015 and Upper-Voice Structures and Compositional Process in the Ars nova Motet, Routledge 2018) and of some thirty articles, chapters, and reviews published in venues including the Journal of the American Musicological Society, the Journal of Musicology, Early Music History, Digital Philology, and Speculum. Their third book, The Makings of Philippe de Vitry (OUP 2026), is the first full-length study devoted to the fourteenth century’s most celebrated and misunderstood composer, theorist, poet, and public intellectual. Most recently AZ has begun to explore the long history of intersection between musical cultures and drug cultures that coalesces around practices of intoxicated listening.
